Thiếu phụ đau khổ vô ngần, biết có cố phân trần cũng không lay chuyển được người chồng cả ghen. Nàng bỏ nhà ra đi mà không biết phải đi đâu. Nàng đi lang thang khắp xóm như người mất hồn. Thiếu phụ cứ đi, đi mãi, cuối cùng ra đến bến Hà Giang ở cuối làng. Trong cơn tuyệt vọng cùng cực, nàng đi dần, đi dần xuống sông rồi trầm mình tuẫn tiết.
Ở nhà, chàng Trương tạm nguôi cơn thịnh nộ, bắt đầu lo lắng không biết vợ đi đâu. Chàng bế con đi khắp làng, hỏi ai cũng không biết. Ba hôm sau, có người đi câu tình cờ thấy xác người thiếu phụ nổi lên ở ven sông. Trương sinh nghe tin chạy đến tận nơi, nhận ra người vợ xấu số của mình. Chàng khóc lóc thảm thiết rồi an táng vợ. Đêm hôm ấy, lần đầu tiên chàng mới thắp đèn dầu sau bữa tối. Khi bóng hai cha con vừa chập chờn in trên vách, thằng bé vội chỉ ngay bóng cha và kêu lên:
–Đây rồi, cha của tôi đã về!
Trương sinh sững người, vỡ lẽ, bấy giờ mới hiểu đầu đuôi câu chuyện và nỗi oan tình mà vợ mình phải gánh chịu. Người trong làng biết chuyện, lập miếu thờ người thiếu phụ và vẫn quen gọi là “Miếu vợ chàng Trương”.
Cultural Notes
1 Chiem Thanh, or “Champa” in the Cham language, was a country that occupied most of what is now Central Vietnam. The country existed between the years of 182 and 1832. There had been several wars between Vietnam (under different names depending on the historical period) and Champa before the kingdom completely collapsed. The Cham people are now scattered mostly in Central Vietnam and some southern provinces as a minority people.
2 It has always been a big deal for a man to learn that he will have a son to continue his lineage. The culture has always emphasized the man’s role in the family and society. The saying “Nhất nam viết hữu, thập nữ viết vô” (“One man counts, ten women do not”), reflects this mentality.
