Ha Bi Village was a small coastal village, and the majority of the villagers made their living by fishing. Like many boys from the village, Yet Kieu went to the ocean every day to fish and catch shrimp. One evening, he was strolling home from the beach after a tiring day of work. From out of nowhere, two white water buffalo bounced right in front of him, butting each other violently. Yet Kieu picked up a large stick to block the two animals. They then angrily and hurriedly ran to the ocean and disappeared. He watched them dumbfounded, and then suddenly noticed a few strands of strange white fur stuck on the stick that he was holding. He thought carefully for a few seconds and then swallowed those strands of fur. From that evening on, Yet Kieu became unusually stronger. When he went into the ocean, he was clearly a faster swimmer, swift as an otter. He could walk on the surface of the water like he was walking on land. More particularly, he discovered that he could be under water for a very long time, up to three to four consecutive days, before he surfaced without harm.
During that time, invaders from China often came over to disturb our country. They would sail their large ships over to destroy the fishermen’s small boats. Whoever resisted, they mercilessly slaughtered. A miserable mood pervaded everywhere. The king sent battleships and soldiers to resist, but they were completely unable to rival the invader’s aggressive fighters. He put out an order looking for someone with skills in the water, promising to bestow pearls and gems, and a powerful position to anyone who could eliminate the invaders and save the people and country.
Yet Kieu asked to meet the king, saying that he could help get rid of the invaders. To gain the king’s trust, he showed off his extraordinary strength, lifting thousand-pound objects and smashing gigantic boulders. Yet Kieu even showed off his swimming skills, diving for hours in deep water.
The king, extremely pleased, asked, “How many battleships and troops do you need to destroy the enemy’s ships?”
Yet Kieu reported respectfully, “Your Highness, I need only my strength and my hands.”
The king was immeasurably happy and bestowed on him the title of Head of the Army so that he could fight the invaders by himself. As soon as he arrived at the seaport of Van Ninh, Yet Kieu saw row after row of invaders’ ships waiting off the coast for night to attack. He grabbed a sharp drill and a large hammer and swam with one breath to the open sea. When he was close to the fleet of ships, he dove deeper underwater. He dove from one ship to another, using the hammer and drill to puncture many holes one after another at the bottom of each ship. Thus, one by one, each ship was flooded with water and slowly sank into the ocean. The invaders all panicked. A ship’s captain ordered men to dive into the water to find out what sea monster was sinking the ships. They even cast a gigantic net into the ocean hoping to catch this sea monster. Unfortunately, Yet Kieu got caught in the net. When the invaders pulled it up, they saw a young, shirtless fellow, wearing only a simple loincloth.
The ship’s captain showed him little regard, and arrogantly asked, “Look here, you insurgent! You’re by yourself. Yet, you dare to provoke us by destroying the ships from the heavenly dynasty, and you’re not afraid of losing your head, huh?”
Yet Kieu laughed while replying, “It’s not only me, but a hundred soldiers like me under the water! You should all prepare to die in the ocean!”
After saying this, he used his hands to rip open the net, plopped into the ocean, and disappeared. The invaders, believing his words, jumped terrified onto the remaining ships and turned to leave.
Yet Kieu returned home completely victorious and received a powerful position along with pearls and gems as promised. Later on, fishermen built temples for Yet Kieu at many seaports in the region to pay respect to the fisherman who had destroyed the invaders and saved the country.

Tay Không Đánh Giặc
Nói đến những anh hùng trong lịch sử đã đứng lên chống giặc ngoại xâm trong lịch sử nước Việt mà không nhắc đến những người trẻ tuổi thì quả là một thiếu sót lớn. Chuyện kể về người anh hùng trẻ tuổi tài cao dưới đây cố nhiên có những yếu tố thần thoại không thể thiếu trong đa số các câu chuyện dân gian. Tuy nhiên, mục đích chính của những câu chuyện theo chủ đề này là để khơi gợi lòng yêu nước và niềm tự hào dân tộc.
Làng Hạ Bì là một ngôi làng nhỏ ven biển, đa số dân làng sống về nghề chài lưới. Cũng như nhiều trai làng khác, Yết Kiêu ngày ngày ra biển đánh cá, mò tôm. Một buổi chiều nọ, Yết Kiêu đang lững thững từ biển về nhà sau một ngày làm việc mệt nhọc. Bỗng từ đâu nhảy xổ ra trước mặt chàng hai con trâu trắng đang húc nhau dữ dội. Yết Kiêu nhặt một khúc cây lớn, lao vào ngăn hai con vật lại. Hai con trâu vùng chạy xuống biển rồi biến mất. Yết Kiêu ngơ ngẩn nhìn theo, rồi chợt thấy trên khúc cây đang cầm trên tay còn dính lại những sợi lông màu trắng lạ kỳ. Chàng ngẫm nghĩ vài giây rồi cho những sợi lông đó vào miệng nuốt đi. Kể từ buổi chiều đó, Yết Kiêu thấy mình trở nên mạnh khoẻ một cách khác thường. Khi xuống biển, chàng bơi lội nhanh nhẹn hẳn ra, thoăn thoắt như một con rái cá. Chàng có thể đi trên mặt nước y như đi trên bộ. Đặc biệt hơn nữa, chàng khám phá ra rằng mình có thể ở dưới nước thật lâu, đến ba bốn ngày liền mới lên mà không hề hấn gì cả.
Vào thời ấy, giặc bên Trung Hoa thường sang quấy nhiễu nước ta. Chúng mang tàu thuyền to lớn phá hoại thuyền bè nhỏ của dân chài. Ai chống cự thì chúng thẳng tay chém giết, bầu không khí tang thương bao trùm khắp nơi. Nhà vua cho chiến thuyền, quân lính ra chống cự nhưng không tài nào địch lại quân giặc hung hãn. Ngài truyền tìm cho ra nhân tài trong nước, hứa sẽ ban thưởng ngọc ngà châu báu và quyền cao chức trọng cho ai diệt được giặc để cứu dân cứu nước.
Yết Kiêu xin vào gặp nhà vua, thưa rằng mình có thể giúp vua đuổi giặc. Để được vua tin tưởng, chàng phô trương sức mạnh phi thường của mình, nhấc bổng những vật nặng nghìn cân, đập nát những tảng đá khổng lồ. Yết Kiêu còn trổ tài bơi lội, lặn hàng giờ dưới làn nước sâu. Nhà vua vô cùng ưng ý, phán hỏi:
–Nhà ngươi cần bao nhiêu chiến thuyền và quân sĩ để tiêu diệt thuyền bè của quân giặc?
Yết Kiêu kính cẩn tâu:
–Bẩm hoàng thượng, thần chỉ cần sức mạnh và đôi tay của chính mình là đủ.
Nhà vua vui mừng khôn xiết, phong cho Yết Kiêu chức Đô thống để chàng một mình đi đánh giặc. Vừa đến cửa biển Vạn Ninh, Yết Kiêu đã thấy ngoài khơi trùng trùng điệp điệp tàu thuyền của giặc đang chờ đêm tối để tấn công. Yết Kiều cầm trong tay một cái khoan nhọn và một cái búa lớn, đoạn chàng bơi một mạch ra khơi.
