You won’t believe it, but I went see you or your doctor in the hospital. Your mother went out of6 her mind with worry, saying you were too timid to tell us the truth about your health. I didn’t pull it off7, unfortunately. I was lucky, though, to run into8 a pretty nurse you’d hung out9 with the previous day. I have to admit she is worth losing not only another leg, but your mind, too. As this is the third leg you have lost according to your letters, I’m sure you ought to be used to this by now. If my memory serves me correctly, you lost the first one in a terrible accident when a tram ran you over10 and cut it off11. The second one was bitten by a horse near the betting shop window, when you were staking your last penny on12 a horse at the hippodrome. Later, luckily, the third one has grown back14 but, tough luck, it’s paralyzed now. So hobble along14 on any other one you may have left. As you know, we are barely scraping by on our low income and are not raking in15 huge profits from my business. Money isn’t rolling in16 and I can’t cough up17 a grand each time you turn into a centipede. When your mother and I met, we started renting a part of a house and had to solely get by on18 our wage. I hope, you’ll get your mind right, get a job, and rely on your check rather than legs.
