      Daemen College

“Daemen has moved away from exclusively using the traditional lecture format of teaching and really pushes its students to learn in part through experience. This form of experiential learning engages students and leads them to a successful future”

       INTRODUCTION:

Distinctively Daemen. Daemen College is a private college, offering strong liberal arts majors, exceptional professional degrees, and widely acclaimed Graduate programs. Daemen students have their education enriched by challenging opportunities that engage them in learning experiences through international education programs, collaborative research with faculty, clinical and field experiences, internships for credit, and service learning positions.

       4 DISTINCTIONS

       ENGAGED STUDENTS

The College fosters an academic atmosphere that leads to open inquiry and debate. Daemen’s distinctive Core Curriculum and high-quality majors and degree programs enable students to push themselves further and to engage in high level learning…

At Daemen College the curriculum places equal value on the liberal learning skills that enhance a student’s major or program. Academics at Daemen will challenge you to test your knowledge, raise your expectations, and think critically and creatively. Daemen’s core competencies, honors program, academic exchanges, global programs, and undergraduate research are just a few examples of what makes the College challenging and distinctive.

In today’s global economy, it makes sense to learn all you can about different cultures, political systems, and histories. International study is a staple of the Daemen experience and the College offers semesters abroad, summer programs, and accelerated January term trips,

Daemen’s Office of Career Development and Cooperative Education helps students to find an internship or co-op position so that they can gain real-world experience in their area of interest. Before a student can take on an internship they must take a 3-day class hosted by the Career and Co-Op Office. Students learn how to properly write a resume and cover letter. They also have to go through a mock-interview so they feel more prepared and confident walking into a real interview. Students often express how lucky they are to have the chance to experience what careers in their fields are really like. An added bonus: internship employers frequently offer Daemen interns full-time positions. Employers run the gamut and include business, the sports industry, the arts industry, government, health-related entities, non-profits, educational institutions, and cultural organizations. The opportunities are local, national, or international – including excellent opportunities with the Washington Internship Institute.

Daemen College’s LEADS Center serves as a clearinghouse for students aspiring to realize and develop their leadership skills. The LEADS program affords Daemen students the knowledge, skills, and experiences necessary to bring purpose, meaning, and integrity into their lives, and consequentially the lives of others. The program emphasizes life long learning and civic engagement through interdisciplinary programs that provide and encourage the development of consciousness of self, fosters inclusive collaborative relationships, social change, and civic responsibility.

Daemen believes in “learning through service.” During their life at Daemen, virtually all undergraduate students engage in various service learning activities. Students from every major and class level participate as individuals or groups in short-term and long-term projects or assignments that benefit the local, national, or global communities. Students work with environmental organizations, refugee groups, build environment agencies, tax credits for the poor programs, residents of nursing homes, hospitals and clinics, tutoring children, mentoring in city schools, and service activities in various cities throughout the city and the world – just to name a few of the hundreds of possibilities.

Daemen College holds an annual Academic Festival. The Festival celebrates the academic accomplishments of students in a day-long event during which students present publicly in many formats research finding from various projects. Classes are cancelled for the day.

First year students are engaged in Learning Communities in higher percentages than their peers at other institutions.

All seniors complete a culminating capstone/research experience, many presenting them to the community during the Academic Festival.

       GREAT TEACHING

Classes at Daemen are taught by professors - not teaching assistants. Daemen provides students with small classes and a caring and committed faculty,
