his sinister plan without his son’s knowledge. At the same time Miguel began to see what his father had planned for his future, and he was not interested. He couldn’t openly disagree with his father, but he could create his own plans without his father’s knowledge.

      CHAPTER 13

Amad’s father was thrilled that his guidance of his son’s education had paid off. He was able to fine tune his plan based on what Amad was actually doing. Fortunately he hadn’t been corrupted by either the Mexicans or the Americans yet, and he still seemed to be respectful of his father. Amad had no idea what was in store for him if he followed his father’s plans, but he never had understood what his father wanted from him in the first place. He was a dutiful son and he obeyed his father as he should. Surely Amad would definitely follow without question whatever plans his father had for him.

Somehow he would have to get his plans to Amad, but he felt that it was best only to give him limited information at any given time. It was necessary for Amad to absorb every detail of the plan and retain all of the information, because no one else could know what he had envisioned for the future. Nothing could be kept in writing. He determined that the internet could not be used to disseminate the plans. Emails and websites could be infiltrated, and he realized that careless communications would be a stupid mistake. He could not personally travel to his son and his son’s travel could be easily traced if it became necessary. He would have to use a trusted messenger, and carefully plan the itinerary. This person would have to be willing to make several trips to visit Amad carrying only parts of the plan in his memory each time. He would arrange for Mexican papers, therefore the messenger would have to speak Spanish fluently and appear to be of Hispanic descent. The person had to look young enough to have been an acquaintance of Amad from Mexico City. He had a person in mind who would be perfect for the job and would love to travel for the father of Amad and for the cause. His Spanish was excellent and he had a polished look about him that came from being a member of a wealthy religious family. On the other hand, he did want Amad to come back to Libya before he started whatever job that was chosen for him.

Amad finally could see what his father had been planning for the last few years. He could sense his father’s urgency and excitement about what he could do for the cause, but his own goals were not necessarily the same as his father’s. He didn’t want this to become a problem in his relationship with his father. As his own goals were becoming clear to him, he figured that he could use his father’s plans and money to escalate his schedule. He spent a lot of time thinking about his future during this final year.

      CHAPTER 14

Miguel had been convinced by his father that a trip home would be in order. The statement that his mother had been very upset by his long absence and had become quite depressed, was enough for him to want to return. With his multiple passports, it should not be a difficult task. It was not a good idea to use his American passport for this type of trip. He would fly from Philadelphia to New York, then New York to Mexico City using his Mexican passport. Then he could fly from Mexico City to Tripoli using his Libyan passport. He would see his mother, and then travel to Afghanistan to refresh his military skills and renew his acquaintances with the instructors there. He didn’t see this as taking a significant amount of time.

He needed to discuss this time off with someone in the placement department at the University. This department helped graduate students find employment after graduation, but he needed to take time off. He was concerned about how any time away might effect his applications for jobs. He made an appointment with a placement counselor.

“What should I do?” He questioned the counselor.

“I do want to get the position of my choice, but I must go back to Mexico after graduation to visit my sick mother. I expect to be back in approximately six weeks after that. Should I go through the job placement process at this time, or would I have to wait until I return? I don’t want to miss out on any training programs.” The counselor said that he would research this problem for him. He was asked to return the following day. Miguel figured that the counselor wanted to check Miguel’s grades and his potential of getting the premium jobs before any answers were given.

When he returned to see the counselor, he made sure to have a look of concern on his face. He wanted to show the concern for his mother and also concern for the possibility that he would lose many of his potential job opportunities. “I have spoken to your professors and the administration of the school. Your superb grades and performance at school should allow you some flexibility with future employers. We suggest that you apply for the positions that you are interested in. If the companies are truly interested in you, then they will allow you a later start date. We can help them make that decision by pointing out your excellence.” He had hoped that this would be the response, but he wasn’t sure that this outcome would be possible.

      CHAPTER 15

Miguel began to research small pharmaceutical companies that manufactured generic drugs. He felt that a position within a company like this would be a great way to learn the industry from the inside. He thought it would beneficial to him to learn about generic drugs and discover any differences between generic and labeled drugs. He wanted to learn how the generic drugs were manufactured, and he wanted to find out how much time and research the FDA entertained on the generics. Eventually he came up with a limited list of companies that fit his criteria.

Usually the professors would recommend students (or not recommend students), and the placement office took it from there. Miguel had to open himself up to relationships with his professors in graduate school, and he had no concerns that the professors would not recommend him. It was part of his education. In fact he was sure that he could get a position wherever he chose. His grades were superb, and he was well liked by his professors. He discussed with them his list of small generic pharmaceutical companies. They all wanted him to work for a larger more well known company but agreed to help him become employed in any company of his choice. He decided that he wanted to stay in Pennsylvania. Not that he loved the area so much, but he didn’t want to spend any time traveling to a new state. He had learned enough about the marketing of generic drugs to know that the small companies were usually subsidiaries of the larger companies. He wanted a position that would give him opportunities within the company in short order. He just hoped that his trip home would not interfere with his ultimate choices..

He sent resumes to five companies with the approval of his most respected professors. He had done a lot of research and any one of these companies would have been perfect for him. He was invited to each of the companies for an interview. He studied each company in great detail prior to his interview. One company was of particular interest due to their most profitable generic drug. This drug would be perfect for his needs and would interest his father. Because of his academic skills, the recommendations of his professors, and his superior skill at handling interviews, he was eventually offered all five positions.
