It was.
Tova eagerly interrupted the conversation. “I’m sure that is well and good for you spirits, but I’m living and I’m hungry!”
Halkatla gave her a despairing look. “Couldn’t you have taken care of that while you were waiting down there?”
“How was I supposed to do that?” Tova snorted. “I was surrounded by a chaos of people and fairies and there were constantly new ones coming up.”
“Tova thinks that all our allies have mobilized,” Nataniel said apologetically. “And I know Tova, she always gets into a bad mood when she’s hungry.”
“Yes, that is a very human trait,” said Targenor. “We’ll just wait here while our friends among the living have a bite to eat.”
He looked through the fog in the presumed direction of the entrance to the Valley of the Ice People. His voice sounded obstinate, almost fanatical, as he said, “But afterwards I will enter the Valley of the Ice People. I won’t give up until I know the fate of my sister Tiili!”
He and Nataniel and Sarmik had all reacted in the same way, as the main reason for their military campaign – to save the world from Tengel the Evil – had receded into the background. Now they had only two ends in view: to find their loved ones and to take personal revenge on Tengel the Evil.
They were joined by yet another individual. A strange man – perhaps “man” was an inaccurate description. He was a creature or being, but there was no doubt that he was male. Once he had been a night demon; now he was more or less unique. Tamlin was more human than demon, but he lived with the black angels in the black halls and was probably highly influenced by them. He, too, had reason to want revenge. Typhoon had been his father and the storm demons were relatives on his father’s side.
Typhoon and the nineteen chosen storm demons had been taken by Lynx and sent to the Great Abyss.
It was for that reason that Tamlin hated Tengel the Evil. The same personal feud that Targenor, Nataniel and Sarmik were anticipating, was exactly what he was also waiting for.
Perhaps it was important? Perhaps that was what gave all four of them that frenzied glow they needed to locate the crux of the matter: namely, the black water.
