Our Mental Legacy: The Evolution of Human Consciousness
In the Word was the Beginning … the beginning of Man and of Culture.
—Leslie A. White, The Science of Culture
AS we consider what we know of man’s dual nature, it might seem that such an existence would be one of continual indecision and chaos, as the individual is pulled in two directions, spiritual attributes versus physical desires. Fortunately, there is a third aspect of ourselves, which helps us bridge the gap between the two. This aspect is the mind, or our mental abilities, which mediates between the promptings of the soul and the desires of the body. In this chapter, we will first consider what the readings say about the constructive power of the mind and then examine the scientific evidence regarding the evolution of human consciousness.
