“Coe College believes that a liberal arts education allows students to discover their real talents and interests, while developing the skills, abilities and habits of mind that will make possible a successful career in any field of endeavor, including ones that do not yet exist. The Coe Plan, a unique program grounded in the liberal arts, is designed to ensure that Coe students make an effective transition from college to career. Coe makes practical experience—internships, off-campus study or research—a requirement for graduation.”
Campus Setting
Coe, founded in 1851, is a church-affiliated, liberal arts college. Its 60-acre campus is located a mile from downtown Cedar Rapids. A four-year private institution, Coe College has an enrollment of 1,300 students. Although not originally a co-educational college, Coe College has been co-ed since 1853. In addition to a large, well-stocked library, the campus facilities include: music studio • GIS/GPS lab. Coe College provides on-campus housing with 12 units that can accommodate 1,040 students. Student Life and Activities
With 85 percent of students living on campus, there are plenty of social activities. Hot spots on and off campus include the Pub, the Piano Lounge, Library Quad, TKE House, Mahoney’s, Moose McDuffies and Brewed Awakenings. Blindspot, athletic events, plays, Presidential Ball and Homecoming are the most popular social events of the year. Coe College has 74 official student organizations. Students groups who influence campus life include Greeks, Cosmos, athletes and the Senate. For those interested in sports, there are intramural teams such as: basketball • flag football • floor hockey • racquetball • soccer • softball • squash • tennis • Ultimate Frisbee • volleyball. Coe College is a member of the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (Division III).
Academics and Learning Environment
For the B student, the learning environment of a college is just as important as the quality of its academic program. Coe College has 90 full-time and 84 part-time faculty members, offering a student-to-faculty ratio of 11:1. The most common course size is 10 to 19 students. Coe College offers 49 majors with the most popular being business administration, psychology and nursing and least popular being environmental studies, Asian studies and African-American studies. The school has a general core requirement. Cooperative education is available. All first-year students must maintain a 2.0 GPA or higher to avoid academic probation. B Student Support and Success
Like a growing number of colleges today, Coe offers a First Year Seminar to help students transition from high school to college. This program emphasizes learning basic writing skills and offers a number of different classes to take to get these skills. To support this, the college has a Writing Center plus a Speaking Center for stronger oral presentations. The college also provides an Academic Achievement Program that offers an umbrella of services. Academic assistance includes tutoring, advising, helping with study skills, getting supplemental instruction, reading assistance and math help. Several types of counseling are offered, including peer, personal, career and substance abuse. In addition, Coe offers the TRANSITIONS program, a half-credit course that helps students “improve skills necessary for successful performance in college,” including the topics of study skills, time management, self motivation and personal responsibility.
Coe College provides a variety of support programs including dedicated guidance for: academic • career • personal • psychological • minority students • family planning • religious. Recognizing that some students may need extra preparation, Coe College offers remedial and refresher courses in: reading • writing • math • study skills. Annually, 82 percent of freshmen students return for their sophomore year. What do students do after college? While many enter the work force, approximately 20 percent pursue a graduate degree immediately after graduation. One year after graduation, the school reports that 25 percent of graduates have entered graduate school. Among students who enter the work force, approximately 73 percent enter a field related to their major within six months of graduation. Support for Students with Learning Disabilities
Students with learning disabilities may take advantage of specific support programs offered by Coe College. If necessary, the college will grant additional time to students with learning disabilities to complete their degree. Also, a lightened course load may be granted to LD students.
