      Introduction

If there were one habit I’d advocate as being the most important for living a fulfilled life, it would be personal development. For most, I’d even say it is essential. As humans, developing new skills and growing as people is central to our vision of self-worth and sense of achievement, but I think it goes deeper than this.

Humans are industrious creatures. We don’t like to stagnate. We hate jobs that lack purpose or ones where every day feels the same. We like to challenge ourselves, and we like to feel progress.

If we’re staying in the same place for too long, we become sluggish and our spirits dulled. We need change of scenery and new horizons – a continued influx of new reasons to get out of bed in the morning.

For me, personal development has taken on a central role. Part of the thought process of deciding how I want to live my life involves observing the habits and lifestyles of people who exhibit the kinds of values I want to achieve in my own life.

One thing I noticed was that it was rare for me to hold in high regard a person who didn’t own and read a lot of books. After noticing this, I made an effort to start collecting and reading more books myself.

Adopting the habits of people whose characteristics you admire seems a useful experiential for developing those same characteristics yourself. Personal development, over the years, has become the main method for achieving my goals in life.

I’m lucky that I was probably always inclined that way from the beginning. I didn’t need a reason to try to learn new things, I just found them interesting, but by actively pursuing these things, I’ve allowed my appetite to grow, and consequently, I think I’ve become a much better person for it. Actually, some of the biggest things in my life I believe are directly attributable to it.

The importance of self-development cannot be emphasized enough as the formula for success lies in exploring new avenues, believing in yourself, and learning from your failures and experiences in order to develop as an individual.

Sometimes people fail even though it might seem like they’re doing everything right. This makes them lose hope, have a negative opinion about themselves, and results in decreased motivation to persevere. However, it is important for you to remember that people who fail are not those who try and do not succeed, but those who do not try at all.

If you’ve faced a setback, doing something about it is an obvious thing. It’s not so difficult to continue once you’ve started, trying at least is what is important. Success will come in its due time. Somewhere down the road, every successful person faces at least a few setbacks.

Inventors go through tens and hundreds of prototypes before they create something that actually works and helps people. They didn’t invent televisions and computers on the first go. It wasn’t with their first book that made great writers famous. Picasso dedicated years upon years of his life to reach the level of fame he did.

Everything great we have today all stemmed from a single simple idea, one that would never have been possible without multiple trial and error attempts. The key concept here is ‘trying.’ You’ve probably heard, applied, and failed in all of this before; but this ‘failure’ is not a case of ‘destiny’ taking shape, but a lack of precision and application from your end. It is important that you know what you need to do to put that right.

The road to success was difficult for everyone who’s on top today. History best remembers those individuals who faced numerous obstacles which forced them to work harder and show more determination than others.

If you are a high school student, furthering your education with a bachelor’s or master’s degree, along with self-development programs, can do wonders to put you on the track to success. Success comes with exploring or trying your hand at new things, and the drive to always want to improve.

When it comes to achieving your goals, not doubting your ability is the key. You have all the physical and mental tools to be that person you were destined to be. Always keep your head up! Those we use as role models today were once just like you and me, insecure and feeling hopeless, but after trying again and again, they became legends in their field.

I believe that you can change for the better, improve, and become a successful person regardless of where you live, who you are, and what you’ve done.

We would still be living in darkness if Thomas Edison believed in failure. We would still be riding on horseback if Henry Ford had given up. We would be spending less time staring at those small plastic things we call phones that rule our lives if Alexander Graham Bell had given in to the clutches of failure.

Individuals that have ever done anything great or have changed the world – a common belief shared by most inspirational innovators, athletes, geniuses, and icons throughout history – embrace failure at some point as a part of life. They simply did not entertain the notion of failure as a bad thing.

These people understand that you are one-step closer to success by every failure you encounter and believed it as a natural process. Some of them even enjoyed it. Failure is just feedback if you think about it. For you to find out what will work, it’s simply showing you what’s not working. You cannot avoid it as it is necessary.

The process of learning from our mistakes is something we need to run toward, not run away from – it is truly invaluable. Let’s look at some inspirational quotes from iconic people who achieved greatness after having faced major setbacks in life. I hope these ‘words’ encourage you to pursue your goals and objectives without ever giving up on them.

“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”

      – Thomas Edison

“Success is the ability to go from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm.”

      – Winston Churchill

“If we all did the things we are capable of, we would astound ourselves.”

      – Thomas Edison
