Therefore, our bodies work in a twofold manner, there are the actions that are done by unconscious thought, such as the workings of our organs, and then there is the actions that are brought about by thought.
Our bodies are wonderful and amazing delicate organic machinery and each movement a harmonic action that showcases the mind/body connection.
Our everyday lives are full of these thoughts put into action in thousands of different ways and we are not aware of the mechanics of it. We want to write a letter but we do not have to focus on the pen, nor each movement of the pen on paper to write.
However, give a small child a pen and ask them to write a letter and watch them. The way they hold the pen may be awkward and there are pauses between letters while the child thinks about how to write them.
We, as adults, have learned the letters already and so the thought we put into the letter writing process is far less than what a child of four or five would have to.
The same thing applies to our thinking positive. At first, we might have to think about our thoughts and actions to make sure they are on the right track. After a while, it is easier for us because we are used to it, we have learned how to and it comes to us with ease.
Actions
In its simplest form, there are two types of bodily actions, intentional and non-intentional.
All of our intentional actions are due to a thought and thinking. In order to go see a movie, we must first think that we want to see a movie, chose one, and then leave to go see the movie. A thought put into action.
Now what if we decide to see a movie and while on the way to the dining room to read the movie times, the phone rings and after the call, we forget to look at the paper. The train of thought to see a movie is lost, well, then, no movie.
Who has not walked into a room only to forget why there were there in the first place, right? Just because we forgot the thought, does not mean it never existed. Later on though, the thought might come back, you know what you meant to get now.
Or how about several hours after you watch a TV show, you can recall bits of a conversation that you heard from the next room; it was only background noise that you paid no attention too while you were watching the show but part of you was paying attention, rather you realized it or not.
Ever gone to dinner with a friend and after parting ways and it is then you realized that they have changed their hair color or style. You noticed without noticing that you noticed. Your brain is always at work, this sort of background thinking is common, and the above examples show that this background thinking occurs without the person doing the thinking being aware of it at the time.
This brings us back to our example about writing. As a child learning to write, we must consciously be aware of how to pick up the pen, how to hold it, how hard to grip it, and how each letter is put to paper, what line goes where to make each letter. As an adult, this because more regulated to background thinking.
We put conscious effort into picking up the pen and to what we want to say but the writing itself; is done without conscious thought. We no longer have to think about how each letter is constructed nor how to spell each and every word; it comes to us without effort.
After enough practice, this is something we can do without great thought or effort. Same with a gymnast; a novice gymnast will have to put thought and effort into each move. After a year or two, their body is used to the movement and each motion is more and more effortless, and nearly automatic.
The mind is still thinking and telling the body what to do, but after repetition of these motions, the brain knows what to do, where to grab and where to place the feet to land without the gymnast giving conscious thought to each and every move.
Our consciousness is a complex thing. If you place your hand on an object, you feel the object, you are aware of it. After time though, you are no longer aware of the feel of the object, your mind has categorized this as a background thought and you are no longer making a conscious effort to think, this feels soft or this feels firm.
When we tend to live our lives in the negative thinking mode, those negative thoughts become our background thoughts. We are so used to them that they become the normal and we have them without thinking about it.
