X-Ray View or Guideline—Shows a hidden flap or surface, or indicates that you should fold to an imaginary line.

Enlarged View—The step following this symbol shows an enlarged view of a portion of the diagram.

      Sailboat

Origami does not need to be complex to be beautiful. This model conveys the essence of a sailboat with only two creases. If you are using the paper that comes with this kit, you can begin on either side; if you are using regular origami paper (colored on one side), begin with the white side facing up. Step 1 shows the proper position of the paper.

      1. Fold the bottom point to the top.

      2. Fold the right corner up to the left. The crease should follow the design on the paper. If you use undecorated paper, there are no landmarks for this fold.

      3. Mountain-fold the same flap the other direction.

      4. Unfold step 3.

      5. Tuck the lower right corner inside and up between the front and rear flaps, changing the right portion of the bottom crease from a ”mountain” to a ”valley.” This is called an ”inside reverse fold.”

      Step 5 in progress.

      Step 5 in progress.

      6. Rotate the model to the right a little so that it stands.

      The completed Sailboat.

Smooth sailing! Add a Skipper and life preserver to complete the picture.

      Tree

This is a fairly small tree. If you want to make a larger tree, omit steps 1 and 2, and fold and unfold corner to corner both ways. Then continue, starting with step 3. Begin with the hidden (inside) side of the tree paper facing you.

      1. Fold and unfold the model in half bottom to top, and left to right.

      2. Fold all four corners to the center.

      3. Fold the upper left and right edges to meet in the center.

      4. Fold the bottom tip up along the bottom edge of the triangular flaps, then tuck it under those flaps.

      5. Fold the inner edge of each upper flap to the outer edge.

      6. Mountain-fold each side as shown. (Hint: You can turn the model over and make valley folds.)

      7. Fold and unfold the model in half along the center.

      8. Pull out the rear flaps on the left and right.

      9. Fold up the points connecting the first and third creases from the left, and also from the right.

      10. Turn the model over.

      11. Accordion-pleat the model along the existing creases.

The completed Tree. To bring the tree to life, add some animal stickers.

      House

This model is an update to the traditional origami house. You open it into a 3-D frame and then place the roof on top.

      House Frame

Both sides of the House Frame paper are the same. Step 1 shows the proper position—the bricks run horizontally.

      1. Fold the top edge to the bottom.

      2. Fold and unfold the model left to right.

      3. Fold the left and right edges to meet in the middle.

      4. Fold and unfold the inner corners to the outside edge.

      5. Insert your finger in the pocket, then spread and squash the flap to a tent-like shape.

      Step 5 in progress.

      6. Repeat step 5 on the left side.

      7. Mountain-fold the two side flaps behind.

      8. Unfold all four side flaps halfway, so that the model stands on its own.
