Introduction
Although origami has been part of my life since childhood, it was about 25 years ago that I really started to devote myself to it, studying the work of origami artists and experimenting with different models.
The more I learned, the more I realized that any model can seem simpler or more complex than it actually is. A lot depends on the instructions and diagrams that are provided.
With the help of the Internet, I began studying the “language” and diagrams and symbols different artists use to explain how to fold, paying special attention to methods that make folding easier and more fun. This book is the result of what I learned through that research. My hope is that these simple instructions and video demonstrations, along with paper that’s well-suited to particular models, will make folding easy and fun for you.
Many of the models in this book are super easy. Others will take a bit of practice to get just right. Take your time, fold carefully, and watch the video demos; they will be especially helpful when it comes to making the trickier folds. Most important of all, have fun!
I hope you'll spend many happy hours folding the models in this book, either on your own or with family and friends, and that you’ll want to keep on folding!
List of Symbols
Heart
Hearts make us think of love and cheerfulness, and the valentines we like to give our friends. Here’s an easy one to make.
Use a rectangular sheet of paper that’s four times longer
than it is wide. You can get this by folding a square sheet in half,
folding again. Cut a off a quarter of a sheet as shown below
and use it to make your heart.
1. Fold the sheet at the center horizontally, then unfold.
2. Fold the four corners toward the center.
3. Fold in half vertically, then unfold.
4. Fold upwards on the diagonal as shown here.
5. Look! The heart is finished!
