Исследование проводилось с привлечением людей обоих полов всех рас и этнических групп. Оказалось, что все ныне живущее человечество – это потомки одной женщины (ее назвали митохондриальной Евой), жившей в центральной Африке около 200 тысяч лет до нас. Из этого также следует, что те митохондриальные болезни, которые проявляются лишь в отдельных этнических группах, являются результатом поздних мутаций.
