Snakes, lizards, and turtles are
all kinds of reptiles. There are
about 8,000 different types
of reptiles in all. Reptiles live
wherever the climate is warm
enough. These animals cannot
heat their own bodies and rely on
warm surroundings to survive.
Alligators and crocodiles are
among the largest reptiles. Each
can be bigger than a person—and
could eat one, too! Most other
reptiles are much smaller. Some
lizards are so small that one could
fit on your fingertip.

Snakes have no legs, just a long,
flexible body. They slither along
by pushing against the ground.
