      DEDICATION

      * * * * *

      To my loving wife, Sharon McDonald Mullaney, for her unfailing support and belief in the ultimate value of this labor-of-love to the worldwide fraternity of stargazers.

      To my parents, James and Ernestine Mullaney, and my aunt and uncle, Elva and Walter Jones, for nurturing my interest in the stars from an early age - including the building of my first telescope.

      To my sister, Elvira Mullaney Schmitt, and my brother, John Mullaney, for putting up with my nocturnal stargazing antics throughout our growing-up and school years.

      To my uncle, Robert Franks, for giving me my first look at th$ Moon and Jupiter through his telescope, thereby starting me on my lifelong wondrous adventure as a “star pilgrim.”

      To Arthur Draper, past Director of the Buhl Planetarium, and Nicholas Wagman, past Director of the Allegheny Observatory, for early inspiration and the use of their marvelous facilities.

      ABOUT THE AUTHOR

      * * * * *

      James Mullaney is an astronomy writer, lecturer and consultant who has published more than 500 articles and three books on observing the wonders of the heavens and logged over 20,000 hours of stargazing time with the unaided eye, binoculars and telescopes. Formerly Curator of the Buhl Planetarium & Institute of Popular Science in Pittsburgh and more recently Director of the DuPont Planetarium, he served as staff astronomer at the University of Pittsburgh’s Allegheny Observatory, and as an editor for Sky & Telescope, Astronomy and Star & Sky magazines. One of the contributors to Carl Sagan’s award-winning Cosmos PBS-Television series, his work has received recognition from such notables as Sir Arthur Clarke, Ray Bradbury, Johnny Carson, Dr. Wernher von Braun, and former student - NASA scientist/astronaut Dr. Jay Apt. His 40-year mission as a “celestial evangelist” has been to Celebrate the Universe! - to get others to look up at the majesty of the night sky and personally experience the joys of stargazing.
