Впервые о нефти Западной Сибири заговорили в начале шестидесятых годов ХХ века. Тогда были обнаружены огромные её запасы, сосредоточенные, преимущественно, в Тюменской области. Именно эта находка, как считают эксперты, позволила приостановить задуманную А. Н. Косыгиным и Е. Г. Либерманом «перестройку» социализма. Найденная нефть позволила продлить агонию советского режима, поскольку значительная её часть отправлялась на экспорт, а взамен СССР достаточно просто получал нефтедоллары. За минувшие годы общая сумма поступлений в советскую казну от продажи сибирской нефти составила примерно 180 млрд. долл. Где эти деньги? На что они были потрачены?
Во-первых, они поддерживали социалистическую экономику. На эти деньги закупалось зерно, продовольствие, оборудование для тяжелой промышленности – в первую очередь, для нефтедобычи.
Во-вторых, именно нефтедоллары позволили Советскому Союзу 20 лет соперничать с США в гонке ракетно-ядерных вооружений. На эти деньги строились атомные подводные лодки и космические корабли, расширялись заводы ядерного военно-промышленного комплекса и совершенствовались средства доставки ядерных боезарядов на территорию «потенциального противника» – в США и Западную Европу.
В-третьих, на эти деньги «на Западе» закупался «ширпотреб», иначе называемый «товарами народного потребления»,
