Fig. 1 Carp Leaping over the Dragon Gate

“Carp leaping over the Dragon Gate,” a phrase used to describe the pioneering spirit of hard work and forging ahead, is taken from a folktale in ancient China. The Dragon Gate is set in the Yellow River Valley. According to the legend, the turbidity of the Yellow River made it impossible for fish to survive, except for the pollution-resistant carp, which thrived in the rough waters. Every spring, these golden carps swam against the current, forming a jumping colony in the Dragon Gate. It’s said these golden carps would change into dragons after jumping over the Dragon Gate. This work depicts a lively picture of a school of carps trying to cross the Dragon Gate.

Fig. 2 The Richness of Gold and Jade

In Chinese traditional auspicious patterns, a pool of goldfish is often used to represent being rich in gold and jade. In this work, the author creates two carefree goldfish swimming in the pool, foregrounding the auspicious atmosphere in a free style.

Fig. 3 Landscape Series (Picture One)

Landscapes are one of the most important themes of Chinese painting, and also an important image in traditional Chinese culture related to auspiciousness. Landscapes symbolize one’s noble character and magnificent career. In this series of five pictures of mountains and rivers, the artist uses paper instead of brushes, drawing on the forms of mountains, rocks, and flowing water in landscape paintings to depict landscapes with different characteristics, presenting crystal rivers and verdant mountains, grotesque and rugged rocks, or high mountains and murmuring water.

      Fig. 4 Independent Hero

In traditional Chinese patterns, an eagle standing alone on a cliff often implies a unique heroic figure. This work depicts an eagle standing proudly on a cliff. This eagle is majestic, commanding, and ready to fly in the sky with open wings. Its composition is momentous.
